Bluegrass Music in American Culture

Many people would tell you that country music is the roots of American music but in truth it is Bluegrass music that tells the truth about American music. Bluegrass is a genre of country and western music that tells the true tale of American music and its roots. Bluegrass music is quite popular in America today and is played all around the globe.

Bluegrass music was inspired by the immigrants and the African American culture through jazz and the blues. Typical bluegrass music is set up around a set of acoustic musical instruments and comes with or without vocal accompaniment. Bluegrass music is an older version of country and western music with altered pitch and instrumentation.

Bluegrass originated with country singer Bill Monroe who played the first known bluegrass in American culture beginning in the late 1930's through the 1940's. Monroe originated out of Kentucky which is also known as the Bluegrass State. Bluegrass musicians often call Bill Monroe the founder of this type of music, although it is inspired by Scottish and Irish folk music.

Bluegrass music has become a well renowned type of music in American culture today with its own specific sound and musical instrumentation. Bluegrass music has its own sound but incorporates country, jazz, blues and other types of music all into one form. Today there are many bluegrass festivals and other bluegrass celebrations around the country.
