The leader of the Gaither family trio is Bill Gaither. He was born in Indiana in 1936. The Gaither Family Trio began singing in the 1950s. Originally the trio consisted of Bill and his brother Danny and sister Mary Ann. After about fifteen years Gloria, Bill's wife, replaced Mary Ann. The trio has won many awards including Grammy Awards, Dove Awards, and Christian Songwriter of the Century.
Gaither founded the Gaither Music Company. Along with singing and writing music his work involved concert bookings, television production, copyright management, and telemarketing. Spring House Music, part of the Gaither Music Company, also works with in-house productions.
The genre for which he is famous are Southern Gospel and Contemporary Christian. Bill Gaither is both a singer and songwriter. His wife is also a singer and a composer. She often writes the words to their songs while Bill writes the music, although they often work together on both words and music. Bill Gaither's voice is a high bass or low baritone. He plays the guitar and piano and often uses either of these instruments as an accompaniment to singing.
For awhile Bill Gaither tried to manage two careers, that of teaching and of vocalizing and writing music. He soon found that this was too much crammed into one life and so he quit his teaching job and worked full-time with Christian music. "He Touched Me" is one of his famous songs and is considered to be a breakthrough song.
