Alison Krauss and Union Station

Alison Krauss was born in Decatur, Illinois on July 23, 1971. She has been interested in music for most of her life and her mother had her taking classical violin lessons at the age of five. Within a few years after that, she was entering contests playing the fiddle and doing bluegrass, instead of classical violin music. She won her first contest when she was 10 and four years later, did her first recording with Rounder Records. The following year she recorded her first solo album.

It was in 1989 that she hooked up with Union Station and completed her first recording with the band. Union Station consists of four band members. Some of the members play multiple instruments like the guitar, banjo and mandolin.

Since Alison has been performing, she has won two awards from the Gospel Association and eight Country Music Association Awards. She has also received 15 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards. Krauss has been nominated and won 26 Grammy Awards. In 2005, the Grammy Association gave her the Special Musical Achievement Award. Alison's voice has been used as the character voice in two movies. She has also done the soundtracks for numerous motion pictures.

Alison Krauss has performed with Dolly Parton, of whom she states she has always admired and who was one of the major influences in her career choices.

Alison has had the honor of singing and playing at the White House for former President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Al Gore.
