Claire Lynch was born in New York and lived there with her family until she was 12. At this time, the family moved to Hazel Green, Alabama because of her father's career. While she was in high school, she met Larry Lynch, and they were then married in 1976.
The first band Claire performed in was a bluegrass band called the Hickory Wind, which later changed its name to the Front Porch String Band. Both Claire and Larry were members of the band from the beginning. Claire released her first solo album, Breakin' It, before the band decided to disband in 1981. At that time, Claire and Larry were expecting their first child. Ten years later, the Front Porch String Band was again alive. The band released their first album in 1991 and it was a success. A few years later, Claire released another solo album called Friends for a Lifetime.
During the years when the Front Porch Swing Band was not in existence, Claire began writing songs and working as a session vocalist. She penned songs which have been recorded by Patty Lovelace and Kathy Mattea, among others. She has also done harmonies for Pam Tillis, Kathy Mettea and Dolly Parton.
Claire was nominated for a Grammy in 1995 and also in 1997. In 1997, she won the IBMA award for Female Vocalist of the Year. She was again nominated for the award in 2007. As of 2005, the band again changed its name and now goes by the Claire Lynch Band. They are considered to be one of the top bluegrass bands around today.
